Ellisys Expands Analyzer Support for Thread Protocol

Update Broadens Capabilities for IOT Security Testing and Wireless Coexistence Analysis

Geneva, Switzerland — June 19, 2020 — Ellisys, a leading worldwide provider of test and analysis solutions for Bluetooth®, Wi-Fi®, Universal Serial Bus (USB), and other wired and wireless communications technologies, today announced the addition a range of features that add support for broader analysis of Thread protocol on its latest-generation Bluetooth Vanguard™ wireless protocol analyzers.  These analyzers, designed for developers of Bluetooth technology, offer ancillary support for analysis of several other wireless protocols, including Wi-Fi, Thread, and Zigbee, typically for characterizing ISM band coexistence testing or for stand-alone protocol analysis.  Thread is a network layer mesh communication protocol based on the IEEE 802.15.4 technical standard for low-rate wireless personal area networks (LR-WPANs) and is commonly used for IOT applications, such as smart home and smart building products.

Engineers need tools that are comprehensive across the multiple wireless technologies that are present in home and commercial venues,” said Mario Pasquali, Ellisys president and CEO. “Vanguard captures and analyzes a broad range of wireless traffic types as well many types of wired traffic, all with precision timings.  These updates for Thread are quite useful to our customers that are developing Thread devices and need to characterize Thread security features or interoperability with Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or other 802.15.4 traffic types.

New Features Focus on Security and IPv6 Protocol Support
Enhancements delivered in this software-enabled update include the addition of new capabilities and updates to existing features in the areas of message authentication, encryption and decryption, support for 6LoWPAN (an IP protocol used by Thread and others), mesh link establishment (MLE) protocol, and support for global-unique and PAN-unique addressing.

Comprehensive Support for a Broad Range of Technologies
Bluetooth Vanguard captures and analyzes various aspects of protocol-level and RF-level traffic from multiple wireless technologies as well as all RF emissions in the 2.4G ISM band, from wireless technologies as well as emissions from common household appliances, like microwave ovens, which can interfere with home networks.  Vanguard’s supported wireless technologies include Bluetooth Classic (BR/EDR), Bluetooth Low Energy (LE), Wi-Fi, and 802.15.4 technologies, such as Thread, Zigbee, and 6LoWPAN.  Understanding how Bluetooth and Thread work together is a key task in the development of devices that use both technologies.  A Thread network for instance, can include devices which use both technologies, where Bluetooth is used to commission new devices into the Thread network.  In addition, since Thread and Bluetooth both operate in the 2.4G ISM band, it is important to characterize how the two technologies interoperate, whether or not device co-resident, and how crowded RF conditions may affect the quality of their respective operations.

Ellisys Bluetooth Solutions Support

Ellisys Bluetooth test and analysis solutions are used by developers worldwide, including radio and controller manufacturers, IP companies, including software stack creators, makers of consumer electronics, cyber security services, automotive companies, test labs, and others.  The company’s wireless solutions include several protocol analyzer tools supporting both Bluetooth radio types – Low Energy (LE) and Classic (BR/EDR).  Concurrent support for Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac is available, as is support for several 802.15.4 technologies.  Ellisys protocol analyzers include the ubiquitous Tracker™, Explorer™, and Vanguard™ systems, each offering deep feature sets designed to meet a variety of customer requirements.

Availability, Photos and Product Information
These updates for Thread are available at no cost, through a software update, to Ellisys customers using Bluetooth Vanguard systems in the Enterprise configuration.  Vanguard systems in other configurations (Standard, Professional) can be upgraded to add these features.  Contact Ellisys for details.  Vanguard is available for immediate purchase with shipments 2-4 weeks from order placement.
